Exercise Ball Exercises Build Core Muscles
Why the Exercise Ball?
Doing your exercises on an exercise Ball increases the effectiveness of each exercise. The instability of the exercise Ball causes the body core muscles to work during each movement to keep you from falling off the Ball. The result is a greater overall outcome in less time!
In addition, working out on an exercise Ball has been shown to be great if you have back problems. The Ball actually supports your lower back while you are exercising. Physical therapists and chiropractors started using the Ball for therapy for this very reason.
For individuals looking for better posture and increased flexibility and strength, nothing could be easier than training with the exercise Ball.
WHAT IS A Exercise Ball?
The exercise Ball, also called the Stability Ball or swiss Ball, is a large, inflated, rubber Ball. The Ball was originally created in Italy in the 1960's and provides instability or resistance which requires the user to rely on 'core' muscles to retain balance - improving strength and flexibility of those muscles.
A Swiss doctor studied its use in a clinical setting by incorporating the Ball in rehabilitation therapy. While it is still used in physiotherapy it has also become known in the general fitness world as an adaptable and enjoyable addition to routines building strength, flexibility and proper posture.
WHO CAN USE THE Exercise Ball?
Because the exercise ball is so easy to use and enjoyable, it is able to be used by almost everyone, young or old. However, because the exercise ball is designed to create instability (thus forcing the body's own muscles to be employed) there is a need for caution. The elderly, injured, pregnant women or anyone otherwise subject to a lack of stability or increased risk of falling, should not use the exercise Ball without personal instruction and care.
When choosing a Ball it is important to choose the size appropriate to your height as well as the intended use. Determine what technique you plan to use before purchasing your own exercise ball.
HOW DO YOU USE A Exercise Ball?
If you are concerned about lower back pain or posture you can use the ball as an alternative to a regular chair. Sedentary workers find that certain muscles in the back become weak over time and are easily strained. Sitting on the exercise ball will improve your 'core strength' by forcing the unused muscles to maintain balance.
There are many videos and books as well as group classes that teach routines targeting different muscle groups. Animated Exercise Ball Exercises is an ebook written by yours truly which will give you plenty of instruction and exercises to keep your workouts fun and challenging. The exercise ball has been used in therapy as well as for professional athletes so you are sure to find a method suitable for your experience and needs.
Performing warm up exercises is recommended before beginning your routine. Using the exercise ball properly will increase the benefits you receive with regular use. No matter what your fitness level, try it out and see how much fun the ball can be!
Fitness experts and trainers and more are now using exercise balls in their workout programs; by that I mean they are showing their exercise clients the advantages to using an exercise ball along with incorporating it into their own exercise routine.
Core training is an important part to any exercise program. Your core is where all movement in your body originates so it only makes sense that you must develop good core muscles and strength in that area to be as fit as possible.
Your body's "core" — the area around your trunk and pelvis — is where your center of gravity is located. These muscles provide support for your spine and, being weak in this area, your body won't move as efficiently and you will most likely experience lower back pain.
A simple task like carrying a bag of groceries can cause pain.
Can you see why it is important to develop those core muscles?
You can train your body's core without any exercise equipment at all. However, core training is best done when the body is placed in an unstable environment.
The exercise ball obviously provides that type of enviroment.
A primary benefit of exercising with a exercise
ball versus floor exercises is that the body responds to the in-stability of the ball to keep balanced, and over time the muscles used to keep in balance become stronger.
Most frequently, it is the core body muscles - the abdominal muscles and back muscles - that are the focus of exercise ball exercise programs.
Prove it to yourself. Get ahold of a exercise ball. Go to a sporting goods store and try one out, or a friend's house; whatever. Or buy one. Most places will allow you to return it if you don't like it . . . . . you won't be returning it except to maybe get a better one.
Lie on the ball in the crunch position (have someone spot you at first so you don't fall off).
Back on the ball, feet flat on the floor, and legs about parallel to the floor. Hands on your chest or behind your neck (don't pull on your neck!)
Do some crunches.
Feel the muscles? More than just a part of your ab muscles are at work. More muscles are being brought into play. You're not only doing a crunch; your body is working to keep you balanced.
The result is less repetitions are needed!
Using a exercise ball as part of a exercise program can include a wide range of difficulty levels, each requiring support from the back and stomach muscles that help firm up the trunk muscles in the body.
Exercise Ball exercises are commonly used as part of a physical therapy program for individuals with low back pain.
Examples of uses of the ball include
- Developing overall control and strength of the core body muscles
- Increasing lower back mobility
- Increasing abdominal and back muscle strength
- Improving balance and Exercise
- Learning proper body mechanics and posture while lifting objects
