Medicine Ball Exercises - Excellent Workout

NEW Health Insurance Site with Audio

A medicine ball (also known as an exercise ball, med ball, or a fitness ball), is a heavy ball, roughly the size of a volleyball or basketball. .

The medicine ball is often used for rehabilitation and strength training, and serves an important role in the field of sports medicine. Do not confuse it with the swiss ball, which is larger and much lighter than the medicine ball.

Medicine balls are usually sold as 8 lb., 10 lb. or 12 lb. balls and are used effectively in plyometric weight training to increase explosive power in athletes such as boxers, baseball pitchers and basketball players.

Medicine ball exercises are used by boxers to improve the strength of their abdominal muscles. A coach stands over the player and drops the ball on the ab muscles, which simulates a blow from an opponent. I do not recommend you do this exercise. Leave it to the boxers.

A medicine ball is also commonly used by athletes who have sustained an injury, and seek rehabilitation.

medicine ball exercise for abs

Here is an excellent overall medicine ball exercise that particularly targets the abs.

Hold medicine ball with your arms extended overhead.
In one continuous motion bring the ball down in a circular motion.
Squat down so that the ball is just off of the ground during the bottom portion of the circle.
Repeat for prescribed repetitions and then reverse the circle.

medicine ball lunge

Another excellent medicine ball exercise, this ones adds more power to your lunge.
Stand with feet hip width apart. Place hands on waist or out to sides for stability.
Step forward 2-3 feet and lower body forming a 90° bend at the front hip and knee. DO NOT allow front knee to extend past the big toe - may cause injury. Take medicine ball during this movement and press the ball over your head.
Pushing off front foot, return to start position. Continue with same leg or alternate as prescribed.
Remember to keep head and back upright in a neutral position. Shoulders and hips should remain squared at all times.

Medicine ball exercises are so powerful and effective. I'll continue to expand on this.
