Spring has arrived and I see more and more people at the parks running and walking. I certainly hope everyone has kept up with their exercise routine during the winter? If not, well, start out slowly so you don't destroy your body. Lately the talk in the exercise area has been high intensity training. An example would be jogging at a slow pace to get warmed up, then sprinting at near top speed for 20 or 30 seconds, then jogging slowly to recover for the same amount of time. You can vary this and your recovery becomes less as you become more fit. My thoughts on this? I like it because I can get an outstanding workout in a shorter amount of time. You will burn fat quicker and you will build your lungs as you really suck in the air. However, despite what they say, I don't think it is for everyone. This is tough work. If you are out of shape, over-weight, older, have physical problems, whatever; you may not want to consider this or, at the minimum, you might approach it in a different manner. Picking up speed for periods when walking, jogging with periods of faster jogging. What I'm a little peeved about is so many saying this is the only way to go and walking and long, slow running don't work. Listen - if you exercise and you increase your heart rate and you do this regularly, you get benefits. They take longer and you might not get the same results, but you benefit. Never think exercise is a waste of your time because it is not. Think of it as an investment in your health. Exercise and proper nutrition can help control type 2 diabetes and can help lower your blood pressure and more. So don't get discouraged when you hear these fitness experts saying you have to have high intensity exercise to get results. If you can do it, great. If not - walk briskley or jog. I can tell you it is a lot harder heading for my workout knowing I am going to be going full steam. I would hate that feeling to stop anyone from doing their routine.
